MRE cases carry a 4-digit Julian date of pack: the first digit is the year, the last three are the day of the year. Enter the code to get the pack date and a shelf-life estimate.

How the code works

A code like 6202 breaks down as:

Shelf life depends on temperature

The pack date is your starting point; how long the MRE remains good is driven almost entirely by storage temperature:

Pack date ≠ expiration

MREs don't carry a true expiration date. The separately printed “inspection date” is a re-check reminder, not a use-by date. Judge an MRE by its storage history and condition.

How do I read the date code on an MRE?

Military MREs use a 4-digit Julian date for the date of pack. The first digit is the last digit of the year and the last three digits are the day of the year. How long do MREs last?

Shelf life depends heavily on storage temperature. Stored at about 50 °F (10 °C) an MRE can last 5 years or more; at 70 °F (21 °C) roughly 3–4 years; at 100 °F (38 °C) only about a month. The pack date tells you the starting point — count forward from there based on how it was stored.

What is the difference between the pack date and the inspection date?

The 4-digit Julian code is the date of pack — when the meal was assembled. The "inspection date" (often stamped on the case) is a future date when the lot should be re-checked for quality, not an expiration date. Neither is a hard use-by date; MREs are judged by storage conditions.

Why is the year only one digit?

To keep the code short, only the last digit of the year is stamped. That makes it ambiguous across decades — 6202 could be 2016 or 2026 — so you infer the decade from context (when you acquired the case). The decoder above lets you pick the decade.
