Julian vs. Gregorian Calendar

Two calendars, one confusing name. Understanding the difference clears up a lot of the muddle around “Julian” dates — even though the industrial day-of-year code isn't really about either calendar.

Don't confuse three "Julian" things

The Julian calendar (this page) is a calendar system. The astronomical Julian Date is a day count. The industrial "Julian date" is just the day of the year. Only the first two have any real link to Julius Caesar or astronomy.

The Julian calendar

Introduced by Julius Caesar in 45 BC, the Julian calendar set the year at 365 days with a leap day every four years — an average of 365.25 days. That was a huge improvement, but it's slightly too long: the real tropical year is about 365.2422 days. The calendar therefore gained roughly one day every 128 years relative to the seasons.

The Gregorian reform of 1582

By the 16th century the accumulated error was about ten days, pushing the spring equinox — and with it the date of Easter — away from where the Church expected it. In 1582 Pope Gregory XIII issued a reform that did two things:

  • Dropped ten days. Thursday 4 October 1582 was followed directly by Friday 15 October 1582.
  • Refined the leap-year rule. Century years are leap years only if divisible by 400. So 1600 and 2000 were leap years, but 1700, 1800, 1900, 2100, 2200 and 2300 are not.

This brings the average year to 365.2425 days — close enough that the error is only about one day in 3,200 years.

Different countries switched at different times

Catholic countries adopted the Gregorian calendar in 1582, but others took centuries. Britain and its colonies switched in 1752 (skipping 11 days by then); Russia not until 1918, and Greece in 1923. This is why historical dates can be ambiguous and are sometimes marked “O.S.” (Old Style, Julian) or “N.S.” (New Style, Gregorian).

How this affects Julian dates

For the astronomical Julian Date, the convention is fixed: dates on or after 15 October 1582 are interpreted in the Gregorian calendar and earlier dates in the Julian calendar, so the day count stays continuous across the reform. Our Julian Day converter follows exactly this rule.

The industrial day-of-year Julian date is unaffected — it's built on the ordinary civil (Gregorian) calendar everyone uses today, and simply counts the day within the year.
